US
Founded in early 1998 by Ms. Lina Choi, the Hong Kong Line Dancing Association was the first organization in Hong Kong to promote and instruct traditional line dancing classes. When the association was first established, there were only a few classes with a small number of students. Under Lina's professional direction, the association has grown in size and popularity. Today, over 30 classes of different levels are offered each week at 6 venues, and more than 400 students from all age groups and diverse backgrounds are currently enrolled. Aside from the regularly held line dance parties and social gatherings, Lina and her students are also invited to perform at various fundraising functions and promotional events. Previous performances include events organized by The Leisure and Cultural Services Department, The Hong Kong Sports Development Board, The Hong Kong Tourism Board, fitness associations, private clubs, community recreational centres, churches, senior citizen homes, educational institutions and non-profit organizations such as "Lifeline Express Foundation". To broaden students' perspective of Line Dancing, professional instructors of international calibre are invited to conduct workshops at the studios. Over the years, guest instructors have hailed from United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. In addition, line dancing students from abroad who are vacationing in Hong Kong have always been welcomed to join classes at the walk-in studio. As this is a common occurrence, Lina's students have had the benefit of added "International flavor" in their classes. Overseas workshops are organized for students who have a particularly keen interest in line dancing, regardless of their level or ability. Lina has led teams to California, Hawaii, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore, in addition to participating as a workshop instructor on several of these trips. Talented and interested students have been encouraged to enter Line Dancing competitions abroad. At the 1st and 2nd Asian Pacific Dance Championships (UCWDC Sanctioned) held in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in 2003 and 2004 respectively, Lina's individual dance and choreography entries won awards in both dance and choreography categories. The most notable award was Lina's choreography "Holdin' A Good Hand", which won overall champion in the "Choreography Country Intermediate Section" in August 2004. At the invitation of Doug and Jackie Miranda (California, USA and chief organizers of the Annual Vegas Dance Explosion), Lina participated as one of the workshop instructors at the 2nd Vegas Dance Explosion in Las Vegas in November (15 - 19) 2006. She taught four of her own dances, "Coconut Tree", "Blaze Of Glory", "Holdin' A Good Hand" and "The Last Waltz". The dance that proved to be very popular and well received by instructors and students alike was "The Last Waltz", which Lina choreographed just shortly before she left Hong Kong for Las Vegas. Invitations to teach at subsequent Event Workshops have included DanceFuntasia 2007 in Penang, Malaysia in June, 3rd Annual Vegas Dance Explosion in November 2007 and 1st Asia Line Dance Cruise in May 2008. The Association celebrated its 10th Anniversary from January 16th to 21st, 2008 with a series of workshop conducted by Roy Verdonk, an internationally renowned instructor/dance coach from the Netherlands. A celebration party with much fanfare was held at The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on January 21st 2008, emceed and coordinated by Doug and Jackie Miranda of DDM Productions, California. On the charitable side, an appeal to members for the Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund was launched shortly after disaster struck. A cheque for HK$130,000 was presented to the "Hong Kong Red Cross China Relief Fund" by Co-Chairwomen Lina Choi and Tsang Pei Wah on May 31st, 2008. In 2009, the Associattion made a donation of HK$10,000 through the Red Cross to aid victims of the deadly Typhoon Morakot that hit Taiwan in August that summer.
